ABOUT THE MIRROR

Because art isn’t just something we make — it’s something we share.

The Story

Before The Mirror existed as a studio or gallery, it began as Cate Before a Mirror — a name inspired by Picasso’s Girl Before a Mirror and the idea that art is both creation and reflection. It became a way for me to explore how making something by hand could bring people joy — how art could turn someone’s memory, vision, or story into something they could hold.

In those early days, my work centered on commissions — creating home portraits, memorial pieces, and one-of-a-kind gifts that celebrated life’s most meaningful moments. Those projects were collaborations built on trust and emotion, and they showed me how deeply art could connect people. Over time, that work became the foundation for something larger — a vision for a space where creativity could be shared more openly, where the process itself mattered just as much as the finished piece.

The Mirror grew naturally from that progression — a way to extend those same feelings of connection, reflection, and creativity into a shared experience. It’s a vision for a gallery and studio that celebrates art in all its forms: as practice, as process, and as presence. While the physical space is still taking shape, The Mirror already lives through its art nights, classes, and creative offerings — giving people the tools and confidence to create on their own. Through hands-on teaching and resources like the Mini Maker Watercolor Kit, it turns art into something approachable and lasting — a reflection that continues long after the class ends.

About Catie

Art has always been part of my life — even in the years when I wasn’t making it. I grew up surrounded by creativity, spending time in my best friend’s mother’s gallery, where sunlight poured through tall windows and the smell of paint lingered in the air. That space planted something in me — a sense of wonder, color, and possibility that never really left.

Years later, after college, career, and motherhood, I found my way back to art with a single paintbrush and a spark of curiosity. What began as a whim quickly became a calling — and eventually, The Mirror.

Today, my work blends fine art, teaching, and community. Whether through a class, a kit, or a collection, I hope to give people that same feeling I rediscovered: the quiet joy of creating something with their own hands.
